The University of Texas of the Permian Basin will get $5 million from the Midland Development Corp. to help fill out the third floor of its yet-to-be-constructed engineering building at its Midland campus.

President David Watts was on hand as the Midland City Council unanimously approved the deal that will help build out classrooms, laboratories and associated facilities for the home of the school’s future chemical and electrical engineering departments.

“This is a major step forward,” Watts told the council, “a sign of real collaboration between the school and the city of Midland.”

The $52 million engineering building will join the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center and Center of Energy and Economic Diversification on the Midland campus, which is located northeast of the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 1788 and State Highway 191.
